Immigration and Nationality Law in San Francisco

Citizenship and Naturalization

The right to vote. The right to travel in and out of the U.S. freely. The right to sponsor others who want to come to this country. The right to receive full protection under the laws. These are some of the reasons that many people want to become a citizen of the United States.

Among the services that we provide are:

  • Screening for potential obstacles to U.S. citizenship that might lead either to denial of the application or even to initiation of removal proceedings

  • Preparing and filing the application

  • Recommending actions to take if the application needs to be strengthened

  • Preparing you for the interview

  • Appearing with you at your interview

Family Immigration/ Marriage based Immigration

At the Law Office of Ruby Lieberman, we believe that reuniting family members and making sure that families are not separated, is one of the most important things an immigration law firm can do. We have helped hundreds of people from all over the world obtain legal status through family petitions. Whether your family member is submitting their application in the U.S. or is applying for an immigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, we use all of our resources to achieve a timely and successful outcome. In LGBT cases, when the safety of an applicant is at issue in the home country, we use third country processing to keep the applicant safe.

Deportation/Removal Defense in Immigration Court

Although Immigration Court proceedings are not considered criminal proceedings, the consequences that may be imposed by an Immigration Court Judge – deportation and removal from the U.S. – can be more severe than the punishment imposed in many criminal court proceedings.  Individuals in Immigration Court proceedings have the right to an attorney, but the government is not required to provide an attorney free of charge.

Our law office has more than twenty-three years of experience successfully handling complex deportation/removal cases.  We take the time to understand our clients and their needs, and provide an honest assessment of each case before undertaking representation.  We have successfully prevented the deportation/removal of numerous clients, and have secured legal residency for them.

Asylum

The Law Office of Ruby Lieberman is recognized for its fierce and compassionate advocacy for asylum applicants.  We have helped individuals from all over the world obtain the protection of asylum in the U.S.

If you are afraid of returning to your country of origin, you may be eligible for asylum.  We will carefully listen to you to understand your concerns and assess your situation, and will work closely with you to ensure the strongest possible presentation of your case.  We have successfully dealt with obstacles to asylum, including the one-year bar and firm resettlement, as well as membership in certain groups.

We also help asylees bring their spouses and children to the U.S., and assist asylees with their applications for permanent residence.

Appeals

The Law Office of Ruby Lieberman has successfully represented numerous individuals at all stages of the appeal process, including at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Administrative Appeals Office.

We have experience with appeals involving matters such as:

  • Asylum, withholding of removal, and the U.N. Convention Against Torture

  • Visa petitions, including those based on marriage

  • Hardship waivers

  • Immigration consequences of criminal convictions

  • Other complex immigration matters.
Mandamus

Occasionally it becomes necessary to sue the government to compel it to make a decision on an immigration application. This may be an option when an application is pending at the Department of Homeland Security for much longer than is customary. Our law office has successfully represented numerous individuals in Mandamus actions and other U.S. District Court litigation that compelled the government to issue a decision on a delayed application.
